Library Media Center Happenings

We opened in the Fall with brand new carpeting and newly painted walls. What a funky fun place it is for sure. Over 20,000 items have been checked out so far this year. This is a "happening" place!

We kicked off the annual Triple Crown Awards program in October with 150 new books...which are consistently checked out. Remember you have until April to read your minimum in order to vote for your favorite. 4th grade Reading Buddies program

Fourth graders are once again enjoying the opportunity of being a reading buddy to a kindergarten student. In the beginning of the program, fourth grade students read a book to the kindergarten students, practicing their fluency and expression. Before you know it, the kindergarteners are ready to return the blessing!

3rd Grade Science Lesson
The third grade students are studying Ecosystems and Habitats this month. Last week the students went on a local 'field trip' around the school campus to look for living and non-living things. They were so intrigued by the variety of living things living right on their school campus. The third graders are learning that God created plants and animals with certain characteristics that make them suited to a specific habitat.

Even though our school year is coming to close, very exciting things are still happening in art! There will be beautiful artwork on display from every Kindergarten student on the same day as their 'Patriotic' play. This will take place on Friday, May 13th in the Kindergarten hallway. On the last day of school, June 2, while the 4th and 5th graders are involved with their 'Under the Sea' presentation, we will also be displaying their art work! Please stop by and treat yourself to all these beautiful works of art before you start your summer vacation!

What's New in the Library

Wacky Wednesday was a huge success! Almost everyone was dressed in the wackiest attire. A fun day was had by all!

The annual Sonshine BookFair was a sensation thanks to all of you fabulous shoppers! With the profits, we were able to purchase wonderful new books for the Library that will be available for checkout in a few weeks.

In celebration of National Library Month in April, the students were able to enter a bookmark contest. The winner from each group will have their bookmark professionally printed and several will be available in the Library. Look for the winners who designed bookmarks...their names will be posted in the Library at the end of the month.

The Children's Crown Award contest is coming to the end on Friday, April 15. Eligible students will be voting on their favorite book next week at a voting party. The winning titles will be announced the end of May.

CCA 5th Graders Visit JA BizTown

Imagine a city where young consumers rush to the bank to deposit their paychecks, sales clerks create merchandise displays and reporters interview local business leaders to get the most up-to-date story. Across the way the restaurant prepares for the lunch hour and the mayor meets with business managers to get an understanding of current economic trends. This could be any city in the country, but it is this image that perfectly describes a day at JA BizTown

Our 5th grade team brought over 100 students and 40 parent volunteers to BizTown for the day. Twenty lessons were taught in school for a month leading up to our visit. The students had the opportunity to learn about the economy in a fun, hands-on, and interactive way.

Kindergarten Students Visit the Farm

Our field trip started with a ride on a school bus. It was the first time on a bus for many students. Everyone was so excited!

We arrived ready for adventure!

God provided perfect weather for our picnic lunch.

We made some new friends.

It was so nice to actually touch some of the animals we have been learning about!

We solved the case of the missing gingerbread man. It took a while, but we finally found him!

We had to follow clues through the woods.

Aha! Another clue! Red sugar sprinkles from the sneaky cookie! We learned that if we paid close attention, we COULD catch the gingerbread man. He was delicious!

We enjoyed some stories in the cottage. We even think our storyteller may have been Mrs. Wishy-Washy herself!

Everyone had fun singing some silly songs with "Uncle Shelly".
It was a wonderful day packed with fun!

Second Grade Superstars visit the Anne Kolb Nature Center

Second grade has been diligently studying about habitats in science. We wrapped up our unit by taking a field trip to the Anne Kolb Nature Center in Ft. Lauderdale. Our guides gave us tons of interesting information about the different creatures and plants that inhabit the estuary. After our tour inside, we took the stairs to the top of the 68-foot observation tower. This tower provided a spectacular view of the mangrove estuary, West Lake, the Intercoastal Waterway, and the Atlantic Ocean. It was also a great cardio workout to climb all those stairs. We had a wonderful time learning about God's creation at the nature center.

Third Grade Field Trip with Professor Endeavor

Third grade has been studying the solar system in science and reading. To end our unit we invited Professor Endeavor to come into our classrooms. We had a blast launching rockets, examining asteroids and meteoroids, and discovering how earth rotates on its axis around the moon. Thank you Professor Endeavor for making learning so much fun!

The Fabulous Fourth Graders Take on St. Augustine

On January 6^th and 7^th, ninety fourth grade students and seventy-one chaperones traveled to St. Augustine, Florida, to culminate the classroom study of Florida history. In class, the students read about the early explorers and the founding of St. Augustine. It was exciting to see history come alive as the groups toured many historical sights. The students enjoyed a musket demonstration and watched a blacksmith make a nail in the Spanish Quarter. The groups walked through the Castillo de San Marcos, the oldest wooden schoolhouse, the old jail, Flagler Presbyterian Church, and Mission Nombre de Dios. Students also enjoyed learning about Timucuan Indians and early Spanish life at the Old Florida Museum. Everyone climbed 219 steps to the top of the St. Augustine Lighthouse and saw magnificent sights. The students were able to share the love of Christ through their homemade tracks with homeless people in the park. The students were a real blessing to those in need as well as to all the chaperones on the trip. The teachers and administration are all very proud of each student. It was a great trip!

It's Time to Learn Some Spanish

Pre-K and Kindergarten students have been busy learning Spanish with Lola and her friends. Our class is fun-filled with hands-on activities, games, books, and songs. High school and Pre-K students sung together worship songs as our high schoolers were preparing for their missions trip to Mexico. It has been wonderful seeing the kids growing fond of Spanish. I am proud of the progress our Pre-K and Kindergarten classes have made so far.

"It's Beginning to Look alot Like Christmas" here at CCA! We have been preparing our first, second and third graders for their production of the "Christmas Story" outreach. The students have been working diligently for their outreach by learning many Christmas songs and acting out the "Christmas Story" for the last few months. Miss Reeder's first grade class was the first to go out and touch people's lives. The venues for the outreaches vary. Some classes will go to nursing homes as others may go to homeless shelters and/or orphanages. This is one opportunity our students have to take the gospel out into the community. Our prayer is that the Lord will bless our efforts as we share His Story. It truly is the "Greatest Story Ever Told". May your time this season be filled with the true meaning of Christmas.....celebrating our Savior's birth with your wonderful children, family and friends. I have been so blessed to have been with your children this year. I will be saying, "Goodbye" to pre-k, first and third grade, as they will move to Drama the first of the year. I will be saying, "Hello" to kindergarten, second and fourth for the remainder of the school year. On a personal note, I truly love all of them as if they were my own.

CHILDREN'S CROWN AWARD: The reading contest has begun! Students in third through fifth grades are pursuing their reading goals to qualify and be able to come to the Voting Party in April. They only need to read 3, 4, or 5 books, but some will set their goals higher and may read all 20 books on the list. That's quite an accomplishment to attain!

ANSWERS IN GENESIS CONFERENCE: Ken Ham spoke to all elementary students in October. He sparked an interest in learning more about Creation vs. Evolution as well as dinosaurs. We were blessed to purchase many resources from the conference and a large Time Line to add to our collection.

LEARNING IN THE LIBRARY: CAROLINA NELSON, a fifth grader, read a book entitled, Josefina's Craft Book by Tamara England. It tells about life on a ranch in nineteenth century New Mexico and gives instructions for a variety of related craft projects. After reading the book, Carolina then made the cutest denim shoes by following the instructions. What will YOU learn from a library book today???

WE LOVE READING!!! Miss Herrmann's class loves when parents come in and read to us each week!! Every Thursday a parent comes in to read for about 20 minutes. No one knows which parent will be walking in, not even their child. It's a mystery! Many of the parents bring in special treats along with it. For example, Mrs. Hughes brought in Monkey cupcakes for us to enjoy while she read a funny monkey book. And Mrs. Ouellette brought in chocolate chip cookies when she read "If You Give a Mouse a Cookie". We are so blessed by this time. Thank you parents for taking the time out of your busy schedules to come in! :o)

Happy November!

Hopefully, you had a chance to take part in our annual Calvary Christian Academy International Day on October 29th. The students were dressed like missionaries from all over the world in breathtaking outfits. The performances were amazing and this event was the best yet. We can hardly wait to see what next year brings.

Upcoming events include: The 1st - 3rd Christmas Outreach program. Students in grades 1-3 will take the Christmas story out to the community and each class will perform the drama with music. The Fine Arts teachers have been working hard along with the classes to teach students the program. Each class will choose a venue where their class will perform.

Please pray for each class performance that they may touch many lives and the true meaning of Christmas is shared throughout our community.

We have been blessed with an amazing volunteer, Janice White. She has offered to use her gifts and talents to make costumes needed for this outreach. She continues to spend long hours sewing for our students that are participating in The Christmas Story.

In kindergarten, we have been learning about communities and community helpers. Each child created a model of a building that serves a community. We have compared and contrasted the jobs of community workers through Venn diagrams and have found that each person in a community serves an important, yet different role. How exciting that God tells us this in His word!
But in fact God has arranged the parts in the body, every one of them, just as He wanted them to be. If they were all one part, where would the body be? As it is, there are many parts, but one body. 1 Corinthians 12: 18-20
We are proud to be part of the body of Christ and look forward to His plan for our lives!

Learning is running wild in second grade. The second graders this year are having fun learning English grammar using catchy jingles about organization and the parts of speech. The jingles are fun and help each student remember important information about the parts of speech. Ask your student about Quigley and a song about study skills and organization will be sure to follow. Second grade has also been enjoying our new science curriculum. We kicked off the year with a unit on plants. There have been lots of hands-on activities and crafts to reinforce the concepts being covered. The community has been our focus in social studies. The students learned about a variety of community services such as the post office, the fire station and the library. We had a visit from Fireman Shuster, who is a fireman for a local fire department. He shared important information with the students about fire safety and what to do in case of an emergency. The highlight for the students was being able to get a closer look at the equipment and try on some of the gear.

Third grade is excited about our new science curriculum. It has many wonderful, hands-on activities and it makes learning fun! We have been studying ecosystems and we recently went outside and explored an ecosystem here at our school. We also did an investigation where we placed a slice of bread and some apple slices in plastic bags. Every day we observed them and recorded our observations. After several days, we discovered that we had mold growing on the bread and apples.

Reading Buddies

On any given day, you can see fourth grade students sharing their love of reading with kindergarten students. This program, called Reading Buddies, is one of the favorite activities for both fourth grade students and kindergarteners alike. Each fourth grade student is “buddied” up with a kindergarten student, and will share a story or two during the 30 minute time block each week. The kindergarteners will also take turns reading their books to the fourth graders. Throughout the school year, the Reading Buddies will get together for special events and activities. The relationships that are built during this time between these older and younger students are truly a gift from God!

On Wednesday, May 5th, nineteen fifth grade students enjoyed a limo ride and a day of fun at Boomers. These nineteen students worked hard all year earning at least five gold medals while making the principles honor roll, logging service hours, or being recognized for outstanding Christian Character.

5th Grade Easter Celebration

In celebration of Easter and the resurrection of our Savior, 5th grade students reflected on what Christ might have experienced before his crucifixion. As students carried a large wooden cross to the west field, Pastor Halleran shared thoughts about Christ's suffering prior to the crucifixion. Students ended the experience by nailing their own personal sins to the cross. This was a special time for the students and their Savior.

Spring Highlights in the Library Media Center

National Library Week was celebrated April 12th through 15th. PreK-2nd grade students were entertained with Guest Readers for a special story time in the Library. Story tellers included a parent author, Broward County Public Librarians, as well as a debut author. Students learned of God's goodness, other cultures, and being a good steward of the resources God has blessed us with.

The Triple Crown Award Program ended on April 15th with a total of 428 students that were eligible to vote. Voting parties were held in the Library, the week of April 26th. National book award winners will be announced soon. Twenty-one 3rd -5th graders took the challenge to read all 20 Children's Crown Award titles and were awarded a certificate and a gold medallion for their accomplishment.

Students are actively striving for the school wide goal of 30,000 AR points. They have over 25,000 and will be rewarded with a water day celebration on May 25th.

Our third annual Summer Checkout will be held May 28th through June 4th. Looking forward to seeing you in our Library Media Center.

VE Fundraiser For Mission Trip To North Africa

How are you serving the Lord? The Varying Exceptionalities (VE) Class focused on serving the Lord through action and prayer. Students took part in a fundraiser to benefit Coach Gamble’s mission trip to North Africa. In class, students prayed for the team’s protection, the nation’s spiritual needs and for the strengthening of God’s Kingdom.

First grade had a fantastic field trip to Flamingo Gardens! We have been learning about plants in our science unit, so we were excited to learn more in "The Green Machine". Students were able to see some of God's amazing creation including some cool creatures, such as panthers, flamingos, and bobcats. They even had peacocks roaming freely around the park! First grade was given the privilege of leading chapel on Friday, February 26th. Since February is the month of love, we decided that this would be an appropriate theme for chapel. All 5 first grade classes performed songs and read scripture about love. Then we were blessed to have Pastor Williams give a great devotion on three different kinds of love: God's love for us, our love for God, and our love for others.

However, CCA celebrates on the 1st Wednesday of March in honor of one of his most popular children's books: Wacky Wednesday. Everyone likes to be wacky once in a while! He wrote Wacky Wednesday under the pen name Theo Leseig (which is his actual surname "Geisel" spelled backwards!) 5th Grade 100th Day of School Activities

To celebrate the 100th day of school 5th grade participated in various activities. In Language students made a banner writing 100 reasons why they loved CCA. In Reading students wrote out 100 different books that 5th graders like to read. For Social Studies students talked about what happened 100 years ago, and in Science, students decorated lockers with 100 frogs! Mrs. Martin had her Math students write what they would do with 100$. The students showed great school spirit, dressed in school colors, and enjoyed all the activities of the day.

Students in Miss Herrmann's class celebrated the 100th day of school with some fun centers. We made 100 day trail mix, looked for 100 words, drew what we think we will look like when we're 100 years old, drew a symmetrical design in 100 squares, made crowns, and did movements 100 times (jumped, clapped, snapped, etc). We had a GREAT time! We also enjoyed CCA school spirit and jean day. Our class collected $26 to give to CCA Merida. Wow! We have been so blessed by God these past 100 days of school!

Students in Mrs. Contento's class recently spent a chilly day enjoying winter activities and dressing in mittens and caps. Each child created a snowman and then wrote step by step instructions so that their friends could re-create their masterpieces. Everyone thought it was hilarious that not a single snowman looked the same as their partners! A lesson on writing good instructions and follow directions was learned by all!

The 3rd grade students enjoyed studying the Solar System. They learned many facts about each planet and the sun, created by God. The students created outstanding models and posters of our Solar System. All of the 3rd grade teachers were in awe at their creativity and effort.

The 4th grade at C.C.A. spent two full days in the historical city of St. Augustine, Florida, on January 21st and 22nd. The students, along with their parents, were able to visit many sites that culminated their study of Florida history. Some of the places that they visited were the Oldest Wooden School House, Flagler Memorial Presbyterian Church, Castillo de San Marcos Fort, Colonial Spanish Quarter Museum, St. Augustine Lighthouse and Museum, Mission Nombre de Dios, Old Florida Indian and Spanish program, and the Oldest Jail. Not only was the trip educational, but it was also a lot of fun. A scavenger hunt in the evening was a big hit for the students as they raced around the quaint city looking for answers to clues. An outreach project was also a significant part of the trip as the students handed out witness tracts that they personally made. Before leaving on the trip, the students prayed for the Lord to lead them to the person who should receive their tract. God is to be praised for an amazing trip for the students where memories of their first overnight field trip will not soon be forgotten.

The word of God exhorts us to take care of the orphans and widows of the world that are alone and hurting and feel that they have no hope. It is the prayer of the entire fifth grade that God will use them to minister to these children and families in some way in our own community. On Friday January 8th, the fifth grade led chapel for the entire elementary school to put a focus on that need in our world and in our own community. Fifth grade students led worship and read monologues written by students from the perspective of an orphan. They even ran the sound booth for the chapel. After a slide show presentation Pastor Doug Sauder, President of 4kids of South Florida, spoke to the students about what they could do for orphans right here in Broward County. We give God all the glory for the outstanding presentation the students made and the memorable and moving encouragement we received from our speaker. Fifth grade asks for your continued prayers as they look to bless orphans and single mothers this school year.

Fifth Grade Outreach at the Broward Children's Center

On Wednesday December 16th over twenty 5th grade students visited the Broward Children's Center to spread CHRISTmas cheer. Students first visited the daycare center, sang Christmas carols, and had a time of fellowship with the students. Next the students walked over to the living facility where students were able to sing to and fellowship with children who were physically disabled. It was a joy to see the interaction that our fifth graders had with the residents. We look forward to being able to visit again with these children.

Outreach at Mills Pond Park

On Saturday December 19th Fifth grade students had the opportunity to minister to three families at Mills Pond Park. These three families were the same families that we blessed at Thanksgiving with huge baskets of food. The students enjoyed three hours of fellowship with these families by playing football, volleyball, boccie ball and eating lots of great food! Mrs. Martin even played a game of Bingo with the moms and completed a craft.

Fifth Grade Celebration of The Birth of Christ

On December 15Th fifth grade students, parents, and teachers all celebrated the birth of Christ by participating in some Christmas activities. Students played games, made special ornaments for their parents, enjoyed a snowman snack, and made outreach jars. The fifth grade team of teachers want to send out a special thank you to all the moms who helped make this a special day for the students. We also want to say an extra thank you to Mrs. Starley for all the time she put into transforming the students into snowmen and Jack Frost with her talent at face painting!

Okay, even though the weather outside is hardly what this song is talking about, first grade still had fun pretending it was on Winter Wednesday and Frosty Friday. Students dressed up in Christmas colors and wore scarves, mittens, hats, boots, ear muffs, sweaters and coats. We all posed for our class pictures and then we ended the day with hot chocolate! Yummy!

Congratulations to all first through third grade Christmas outreach classes. Our school has been recognized by the Association of Christian Schools International as an "Exemplary School Program for the 2009-10 school year."

Thanks to the pastors at Calvary for leading the church to focus on outreach. Thanks to Tim Flay for having the vision to see how outreach could be accomplished by transforming the way elementary does their Christmas program. Thanks to the entire elementary team of students, parents and teachers for embracing that change and for taking one large in-house Christmas program and transforming it into 15 separate outreach events.

Our CCA objective is to share the Christmas story and the gospel with the lost in South Florida. A brief summary of our program: For years our elementary school had put on a Christmas program in the sanctuary of our church, inviting parents and guests to attend. A few years back, our church leadership had a time of getting away and seeking the Lord for direction and returned with a renewed focus on several key aspects of the ministry, one of which was outreach. As a ministry of the church, the school was encouraged to look for ways to get beyond the four walls of the church to take the gospel to the lost. One key phrase of Jesus that was focused upon was how he told the disciples in the great commission to “Go” and make disciples, rather than ask the lost to come to you.

A few summers ago, our Fine Arts Director sensed a leading from the Lord that our school should take the in-house elementary Christmas program and transform it into an outreach event. Instead of hundreds of parents coming to see their child play a small part in one large in-house Christmas program, each of our individual 1st, 2nd and 3rd grade classes would perform the traditional Christmas story in a venue outside of the four walls of the church, somewhere off-site. The children learned the traditional Christmas music and their speaking parts from their music, movement, and drama teachers while in those “specials” classes while homeroom teachers focused on choosing the venue in which the class would perform. Teachers were asked to prayerfully consider where God might lead them to take their class. Some would choose nursing homes, others would choose to visit homes for foster children, others performed in downtown Miami for a homeless ministry while others might bring the light of the gospel to a neighborhood park or shopping mall.

Among the three grade levels this year we have 15 classes, each taking the Christmas story and the gospel to unique locations off-site sharing the gospel with the lost. This is our third year of outreach this way. Often a parent or teacher would share the gospel at the end of the Christmas performance and many would commit their lives to Christ. Many parents and teachers went so far as to schedule follow-up communication so that the impact could be that much greater.
We are excited and proud about this change in the Christmas program for three key reasons. First, we were taking the gospel to the streets, meeting the lost where they are. Through this new way of doing the Christmas program so many more people hear the gospel and the awesome story of what God has done for us. Second, we moved from doing modernized Christmas programs to instead acting out the biblical Christmas story and singing the traditional Christmas songs which are such a beautiful part of our Christian heritage and which so poetically share God’s glorious grace towards man. Thirdly, I know that parents enjoy seeing their children in a single class production in which each of them have a chance to play a more meaningful part of the program.

Students and parents are blessed and the gospel is going forth. Instead of asking the lost to come to us, our students will go out to them.

Movement Class/ Brain Gym

Recently, I had the privilege of going to a Brain Gym conference. Brain Gym is a learning program that brings about rapid and often dramatic improvements in reading, writing, language, and other numerical skills. Many others use the work to profoundly enhance the quality of their attention and concentration, relationship and communication, memory and organizational skills, athletic performance and more. People of all ages can benefit from the program. This quarter the kindergarten, second, fourth and fifth grades have had the opportunity to learn one of the basic exercises to take back to their regular classroom and to use at home. There are 26 other movements that enhance the benefits of the program in which the students will continue to learn in Movement class. The second semester Pre-K, first and third grade will have the opportunity to learn about Brain Gym. We are excited to see the positive changes in our students as we enhance their learning environment.

One of our CCA teachers is a descendant
of a Mayflower passenger/pilgrim...

Elementary Music Teacher, Kimberly Adkins,
is in the line from Stephen Hopkins, a pilgrim
who was born in 1582 and died in 1644. He
was a tanner and merchant who was one of
the passengers on the Mayflower in 1620,
settling in the Plymouth Colony. Hopkins
provided governance for the colony as well as
assisted with the colony’s ventures through
1636. He was also one of forty-one signatories
of the Mayflower Compact, and was
deputized to meet the Indians and act as an
interpreter. This means that Mrs. Adkins’ kids,
Clayton and Elise, who go to CCA, are also
descendants of Stephen Hopkins. Cool stuff!

Robert Elmer visits CCA!

What a grand day we had when Christian author, Robert Elmer, spoke to students in 3rd-8th grade! The day began with an all group assembly in the Theatre from 8:15-9:00. He was able to capture and hold the students' attention while expressing the virtues of reading and writing. While every student may not become a professional writer, every student does have a story to tell. He explained further, that God has planted seeds in a each and every one of us. Those seeds are planted through our experiences and we use those experiences to relate to others whether in person or in writing.

Fourth and sixth grade students were chosen to further their understanding of the writing process by attending several workshops throughout the day. The workshops focused on ideas such as, developing characters, writing good endings and using what you know to write historical fiction.

The highlight of the day was the "Lunch with the Author" that was held in the Grill for six students-one each from 3rd-8th grade- that won the essay writing contest sponsored by the CCA Library Media Center. We are so blessed to have the resources to offer students such an incredible opportunity. We look forward to planning next year's author visit!

Collaborative Learning: High School Presents to Elementary Students

Mrs. Peyton's high school "Speech and Debate" class had an opportunity to practice their presentation skills by speaking to our elementary third and fourth grade students. Mrs. Peyton had nine students who presented a mini-devotional that focused on each individual high schooler's childhood experience and how they learned and grew from that experience.

Mrs. Peyton opened by sharing her student's favorite things with the class so they would have some knowledge about their presenters. She then opened in prayer.

The high schoolers began by individually sharing a story that had a beginning, middle, and end. They displayed positive body language, eye contact, gestures, facial expressions, and use of props. They each closed with a scripture that mirrored and taught a lesson regarding their particular story. At the end of each presentation, Mrs. Peyton framed the entire presentation with some relatable questions so our elementary students could interact with the message.

Mrs. Peyton notes... This collaborative effort has been made to give the students "real world" experience with an authentic audience. Due to the class being small, speaking to an intimate group does not afford them the opportunity of real growth in their public speaking. These elementary venues and those of the study hall for high school students provide REAL, on the spot audiences that do provide feedback. Yes, authentic assessment at its best! God is FAITHFUL!

The students at CCA have been studying the virtue compassion for the month of October. Putting our action to God’s word, Coach O’s 6th graders and Ms. Vitulli’s 3rd graders teamed together to talk about what it means to have compassion. Coach lead the discussion by reading Luke 10:25-37. Then the group talked about what compassion looks like in the Parable of the Good Samaritan. Together, the two groups searched and shared verses from the Bible on compassion. As we wrapped up, the Bible Buddies made compassion rolls. These rolls were filled with Hershey hugs and kisses, a band aid for healing and a life saver to show we all need a Savior. The task presented to them was to go and find someone who needs compassion and share it with them. We can’t wait to hear some of the exciting stories the students will share.

On Thursday, October 22nd, Mrs. Vlachos’ class went to Palm Aire Park to celebrate the end of the first quarter and the beginning of the harvest season. With the approaching Thanksgiving season, we had the opportunity to give thanks for the many blessings the Lord has bestowed on us. We played many fun games like pumpkin relay race, 3 legged race, potato sack race, donut on a string, milk bottle throw, and searching for quarters in piles of hay. Also since it was Mrs. Vlachos’ birthday, the students surprised her with a party and showered her with many lovely cards and gifts.

First grade had a wonderful first field trip of the school year. We were blessed to be able to go to the War Memorial Theater to see the story "Henry and Mudge" come to life on stage. Students learned great lessons about friendship from these loveable and funny characters. Then we walked to the park next to the theater for a picnic lunch. To end our time, we enjoyed some playing time in the park's awesome playground. We Love Field Trips!! :)

On October 1st one-hundred and thirty fifth grade teachers, students, and parents headed up to Lake Swan in Ocala Florida to learn more about God's creation. Students enjoyed two days of canoeing, swamp exploring, team building exercises, and cooling off in the crystal clear waters of Lake Swan. One highlight of our trip was sitting by the camp fire singing worship songs to our Lord while enjoying His heavenly display above. Worship was topped off by a devotion from Mr. Gushue, Joey's dad, and yummy s'mores! We praise the Lord for good times, beautiful weather, safe travel, and giving us nature to enjoy and learn from!

First graders have been working so hard these past 4 weeks of school to earn compliments. Each compliment earns their class a letter in the class "Mystery Message". Some of the messages so far have been "Love One Another" and "Jesus Loves You". Once the message is complete, the first grade classes will vote for a special treat. So far Ms. Reeder's class and Miss Herrmann's class have finished their messages and both voted for "Pajama Day". Kids came dressed for school looking like they just rolled out of bed. In Miss Herrmann's class students were encouraged to bring pillows, blankets, and stuffed animals to curl up with during silent reading time. We ended the day watching a movie and eating yummy popcorn. Mrs. Berardo's, Mrs. Miner's, and Mrs. Matos' classes are all getting close to their first prize. Keep the compliments coming first grade!

Elementary Back To School Night

The Elementary School had their 10th Annual Back To School Night on Tuesday, September 15, 2009 for students in K-3 thru 5th grade. We started in the sanctuary with a flutaphone to "Amazing Grace" led by our elementary music teacher, Mrs. Adkins and performed by our elementary students. What a treat for the parents to hear these students perform for them while glorifying our Lord.

The performance was followed by our school leaders sharing their heart and vision for CCA, the students, the staff, and the parents. Then it was off to the classrooms to visit with the teachers. The night was filled with excitement and emotion as parents didn't just hear the vision, but felt it.

Our movie and popcorn was a sure hit with the kids and gave the parents an opportunity to visit with teachers without having little ones to worry about. Chapel is different this year for the 3rd graders. The songs we sing are more "grown up" than they were last year in 2nd grade. This year, the 3rd graders will also experience personal worship time with God. The students are encouraged to clap and sing along as we praise our King; however they lift their hands in worship on their own as they are drawn to HIM. It is amazing to see the intimate relationship that these children have with our Father.
